Phenylactone (P2P) may or may not be present. Methyl-2-phenylacetate produces a secondary GC/MS peak of P2P. The ratio detected of P2P to Methyl-2-phenylacetate is similar to a certified standard analysis.

The GC/MS process sometimes causes substances in the original sample to be altered by the solvents, heat, and/or pressure involved in the analytical process. Sometimes those 'analytical artifacts' actually help confirm the identity of the original substance.

It's possible that some or all of the phenylacetone in this sample is an analytical artifact and it was not truly present in the original sample. We're not 100% sure in this case, so our final opinion for this sample is that phenylacetone could be present.
